Transportation in the Ionian Islands
For many decades the Ionian Islands have
suffered because lack of a decent ferry service to connect the
seven islands. Now that’s all in the past as the seven islands
have a new operator, Air Sea Lines. This is a private shuttle
service to and from the islands.
Air sea lines, is a private Greek Canadian
venture that just recently has provided relief to thousands who
currently rely on seasonal sea routes. Now they offer daily
service between the major tourist destination of Corfu and
Kefalonia with connections to other Ionian Islands such as
zakynthos, paxos and lefkada. Flights to Italy are also soon to
be announced.
The concept of this company is to connect
impossible places to be reached by ferry. A great advantage of
sea planes is that when you’re flying you to have a spectacular
view because they tend to fly lower than normal airplanes. The
best part of all is you can arrive 15 minutes before your
departure. Another advantage of the sea plane is it gives
passengers more free time to do what they want. For example, A
trip from Corfu Town to Kefalonia you have to take 3 separate
ferries but with the sea plane it’s a 20 minute ride. Now,
that’s what I call saving time.
Another famous Corfu Island that’s famous to
many British and Italian vacationers is Paxos. It originally
takes 2 hours by ferry but now with the sea plane it’s a 7
minute ride.
The air sea lines “fleet” consists of three
19 seat DHC 6 /de Havilland Twin Otters, they plan to increase
the fleet to 25 over the next five years.
Passengers who return from their first sea
plane experience are elated from their 40 minute soar over the
Ionian sea.
Sea Plane is by far a better choice as a
means as transportation to the Islands. It’s flexible and
economical in taking a small number of people to out – of –
this- way places. A very important factor is that sea planes can
travel under almost any weather conditions.
Most tourist use the sea planes as a way for
Island hopping you get to see at least 3 islands in one day. Now
would you be able to do this with a ferry. If you planning
you’re next vacation to the Ionian Islands place the sea plane
on top of your itinerary list !! This is an experience for any
age and will be enjoyed by all!!! Don’t hesitate grab the
